Kutxi Creative Residence

During 15 days, we worked with artisans from 6 Cape-Verdean islands in this hands-on residency, initiated at the National Center for Crafts and Design (CNAD) in Mindelo, São Vicente Island.
Alternative materials and combinations were discussed, new approaches and techniques were learned. Potters, ceramists, textile and basket weavers shared experiences and knowledge while collaborating in new ideas.
This hands-on experience introduced design in their working process and enriched the artisans individual experiences and ambitions. Small lectures and talks resulted in discussions on how to communicate and position their products, individual and collectively.
Moreover, the participants reflected on the current role of traditional culture, the importance of material choices in craft production and on creating vernacular — not only in their own activity, but on the artisanal production in Cape Verde in general.
This workshop format became the pilot for an annual crafts residency at CNAD to strengthen craft production in Cape Verde.
The catalogue was launched during the URDI 2019.
